MOSQUITO WAR

CAMPAIGN IN BRISBANE. METHODS OF ERADICATION. “Brisbane will have mosquitoes for hundreds of years unless different methods are adopted,” said Mr. Dart .at a recent meeting of the Brisbane City Council. Mr. Power said that at present 66 men were employed by the Health Department attending to the ordinances, and endeavouring to eradicate mosquitoes in the metropolitan area. Mr. Massey: They are not meeting with much success. Mr. Power said that swamps had been drained, open cuts constructed, and breeding places jn cemeteries had been destroyed. Criticism had been levelled by a former employee, but very little had been done to eradicate mosquitoes before the present council took control of the department. In the last nine years, although a scientist had been controlling the mosquito activities,. no new scientific method for the eradication of mosquitoes had been discovered. It was added by Mr. Power that in the previous campaign fish had been placed in swamps to get rid of mosquitoes, but at his home he had one of the tanks which contained such fish. There were now millions of mosquitoes breeding in the tank under the net and the fish which were said to destroy them were not touching them.
