LEAGUE FOOTBALL

■ WESTERN SUBURBS CLUB MEETS. REDUCED GATE CHARGE WANTED. A successful season was reviewed at the annual meeting of the Western Suburbs Rugby League Football Club at New Plymouth .last night. Mr. H. W; Lawrence was in the chair. The club maintained a strong playing membership, said the annual report, as evidenced by the fielding of two strong teams in the championships. The senior 13, though not successful in the championship, was runner-up in the final, and in the knock-out competition, though not in the final, proved a worthy opponent to both- winner and run-ner-up.

The junior championship was won by the club’s thirteen and it was to be hoped that’in future the club would centre its activities on the lower grades to fill the ranks of the senior team. The club had members selected in representative matches at Auckland and New Plymouth and in Maori representative games. Jack McLeod played in all representative fixtures and was • included in the North, Island team. The club, would commence the 1935 season with a credit balance .of .£2 9s 6d, due to careful management on the part of the officials..- The <>lub lost, however, the services as secretary of Mr. L. McConnell, who had left the district on. account, of ill-health. He had been one of the pioneers, of the club and had been a hard and zealous worker in, any movement for the good of the League code. A small presentation was made to Mr. McConnell,'who was also made the first life member of the club. The report. and balance-sheet were adopted. ... The election of -officers resulted: President, Mr. A. Dixon; vice-presidents, left to committee; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. McConnell; committee, Messrs. R. Frewin, R. Fulton, R. Friar, G. Hooker, C. Wannacott, R. McDonald and V. Simpson, with power, to add; delegate to the centre, Mr. Hooker; senior coach, Mr. Frewin; selection committee, Messrs. Dixon and Frewin and team captain; junior coach and selector, Mr. Wannacott. ■

The chairman replied to a questioner that no genuine unemployed man would be refused admission free to the club's games.

Two members were elected and it was decided to hold the opening day for club members as soon as Western Park was available.

On Mr. Frewin's motion the meeting decided to recommend to the centre that the charge for admission to Western Park should be 6d. Mr. Hooker and the chairman paid a tribute to the support given by the Press. Mr. Lawrence said that though he had been in many parts of New Zealand he had never been in a district where the Press was .more impartial than in North Taranaki.
