LOSS OF STEAMSHIPS
INQUIRIES INTO THE CAUSES. VESSELS NOT UNSEAWORTHY. British Wireless. Rugby, March 12. Questioned today about the recent losses of British steamships at sea, Mr. Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, replied that in cases in which inquiries had been completed there was no evidence that vessels were unseaworthy or undermanned. Inquiries were still proceeding regarding the loss of the Blairgowrie and Usworth, and the question of seaworthiness would, of course, be examined, but there was no doubt that the two vessels were adequately manned. The loss of the Usworth would in due course form the subject of a formal investigation. It would depend on the reGults of the preliminary inquiries, whether similar investigation, would be made in the cases of the Blairgowrie and the oil tanker La Crcscenta.
