EFFECT OF RESTRICTION

MEAT EXPORT LICENSES MANY MEN OUT OF WORK ABATTOIRS AND WHARVES DISASTER FOR AUSTRALIA By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 9 p.m. Sydney, March 13. The cancellation of meat export permits announced yesterday is expected to lead to the dismissal of over 600 meat workers and to have a serious affect on the employment of waterside workers. Dr. Earle Page, acting-Prime Minister, states that if the British Government imposed quotas for the second quarter of this year based on averages for the last three years it would be disastrous for the Australian meat industry. It would be unfair to Australia compared with its effect on New Zealand, he said, because New Zealand’s record export year three years ago gave the Dominion the benefit of an average basis. Dr. Page -added that Australia hoped to obtain a much more generous quota for the second quarter if the British Government decided on any form of restriction. Nineteen thousand carcases of mutton and lamb, due for loading into three ships here were held up owing to a sudden suspension yesterday by the Commonwealth Government of licenses for export, pending the completion of negotiations with the British Government for the regulation of April-June-shipments. The British Government suggested that the April-June quota should not exceed the second quarter of last year, about 405,000 cwt, which had already been shipped. The Commonwealth, however, expects to have 700,000 cwt of mutton and lamb available for export in the forthcoming quarter.
