NEW DAIRY BOARD.

The result of the Dairy Board election makes it evident that the industry considered a thorough change from the personnel of the old board was desirable. Under the system of voting the figures scarcely indicate the support accorded to candidates by individual factories. The votes are calculated on a tonnage of output basis, and by this means one large factory can outvote a number of smaller ones. The swing of three factories in Taranaki, for instance, could have made a difference of 10,000 votes, a condition that makes it difficult to judge the incidence of the support accorded any candidate. In Taranaki the contest has been clean and “sporting.” Mr, W. C. Green, the defeated w?rd member, had been prominent in his advocacy of a free market for New Zealand dairy produce. This may not have aided his candidature at the recent election in certain quarteis, but his work in that direction may obtain fuller recognition as time goes on. It is, at all events, satisfactory to note that his successful opponent, Mr. A. Linton, in addressing dairy companies at Stratford pledged himself to support a policy that would'enable untrammelled buying by any purchaser willing and able to pay the price demanded. The defeat of Mr. W. Grounds and Mr. C. G. C. Denner, both of whom had supported the present restrictions on f.o.b. sales, indicates that the industry is by no means convinced of the wisdom of that policy, and it has demonstrated convincingly its desire for a change in outlook and method on the part of the controlling authority. The board’s duties will be far-reaching and of the utmost importance to the Dominion. The choice of representatives having been made, it is for the industry to give the board its fullest support in all that makes for improvement in quality and wise administration.
