SPORTS TRANSPORT DIFFICULTY. COMMITTEE'S MONTHLY MEETING. The difficulty of the transport of spOrts teams was referred to at the monthly meeting of the Waitara school committee on Monday. Members present were Messrs. A. Chadwick, R. H. Armstrong, L. Old, C. E. Kettle, P. Appleby, E. R. Pryffie and 0. A. McGregor (secretary). The headmaster, Mr. F. R. S. Bullen, was in attendance. In the absence of the chairman, Mr. W. B. Glasgow, Mr. Armstrong presided. Tire headmaster reported that the roll number was 336. For the first week the average attendance was 367, for the second 358, for the third 368 and for the whole period 365 Miss McGreevy, who had received an appointment to the school as a music specialist, would not take 'up duties until the beginning of the second term. The school’s annual swimming sports were held on February 26. Kathleen Old won the girls’ championship, with Phyllis Bullen runner-up, and J. Mallet won the boys’ championship, with Henry Emia runner-up. Mr. J. Hine gave a prize for the runner-up in each championship. The annual athletic sports were held on the Camp Reserve on the following day. The girls’ championship was won by Kathleeii Old, with Amy Nickson runner-up, and the boys’ championship by Russell Old, with Murray Preston runner-up. Before closing the baths for the season, the pupils were given an opportunity to swim for their swimming certificates. In the 25 yards, 24 children were successful; in the 50 yards, 39; in the 220 yards, 21; in the 440 yards, 14; and the 880 yards, 15. A total of 113 certificates was gained. Tire headmaster reported that a new lawn mower had been purchased and the old one sold. Mr. Armstrong reported that the gramophone could be repaired and he recommended that the old machine, after repajr, be kept in use for a time. The recommendation was adopted. It was decided that the names of the champions be engraved on the various cups.' Special mention was made of the unique performance of Kathleen Old in winning the dual championships. The headmaster referred to the difficulty he had in arranging transport for the sports teams and said he thought too much time was given to sport in the Taranaki schools. If the transport difficulty continued It might be necessary to cut out the matches at New Plymouth. . .
Mr. Kettle, on behalf of the visiting committee, reported there was a lot of blackberry about the grounds, and suggested that relief workers be sought to clean it up. Mr. Kettle reported the need for attending to the drains and the desirability of painting the class-room walls in the concrete building. The committee extended thanks to the Mayor for his gift of prizes to the run-ners-up in the swimming championships.
