TRAIN’S RECORD RUN
STEAM LOCOMOTIVE BEST. HIGH SPEEDS ON I,ONG DISTANCE. (British Official Wireless.) Rec. 5.5. p.m. Rugby, March 6. On the run made by the London North-Eastern train between Newcastle and London the speed, 106.6 miles per hour for 12 miles, was the highest ever reached by a steam train anywhere in the world. The effort was undertaken to prove that the supremacy of the coalfired locomotive cannot yet be challenged for long-distance high-speed Tuning. Not only is it claimed to be capable of hauling heavier loads at higher speeds than the electric-driven Diesel unit, but its superior adaptability gives it definite economic advantages.
