BUSH PRESERVATION

NO GOATS WITHIN A MILE.

PARK BOARD APPLICATION.

A decision to apply to the Government for permission to declare the keeping of goats illegal within a mile of the mountain reserve was made at the quarterly meeting of the Egmont National Park Board yesterday. The reason was that members considered goats on the ranges and mountain chiefly came from neighbouring farms, breeding in wild state. Mr. F. H. Waters, Commissioner of Crown Lands, moved the motion, and Mr. F. Amoore in seconding said that a greater distance than a mile would cause trouble among the settlers. The acting-secretary, Mr. L. Lovell, reported that there were 200 goats in the Kaitake valley, though all the goats had been cleared out four months ago. A total of 6500 goats had been deatreyed in the last two years, said Mr. P. Thomson.

Correspondence was received concerning Mr. H. Powell, who had applied for the position of ranger, and Messrs. Weston and Waters were appointed to consider the application with power to act. Mr. Powell as a deerstalker killed more than 400 deer in one range of mountains in a year, as well as ridding the district of goats.
