HAWERA PIPE BAND MEETING. SUCCESSFUL IN COMPETITIONS. The annual meeting of the Hawera Highland Pipe Band was held on Friday night, -Mr. C. H. Bowman presiding over a good attendance. The president, Mr. Bowman, in his report, said during the year the band paraded 50 times for practices. Public parades included Anzac Day, Kakaramea sports, Normanby show, Patea sports on Boxing Day, with the New Plymouth Caledonian Pipe Band on two occasions, Hawera Scottish Society eight parades. The band also assisted in the queen carnival by running dances and raised approximately £5O for the movie queen. At the Taranaki brass and pipe bands contest at Manaia the band was again successful in winning the Thomson Shield for the selection for the third time in succession, and it also won the shield for the quickstep. Some of the band members excelled themselves at the Taranaki Caledonian sports at Manaia in January. At the Te Aroha sports Mr. lan Campbell gained first in the march and first in the strathspey and reel and Master Stuart. Naim was first in the maiden march and first in the strathspey and reel. . The annual competition for the Cruden Cup was decided by one test this year and was won by Piper M. Bain, with lan Campbell second and D. Campbell third. During the year the band joined up with the Queen Alexandra Mounted Rifles and went into camp at Waverley, where it received many congratulations from the commanding officer in charge of the camp. The band also entertained the Queen Alexandra Band to lunch after church parade with the regiment at Hawera. The strength of the band was: Drummajor, 12 pipers and six drummers; with four learning the chanter, a total- of 23. The committee decided to write off £lO depreciation,. and the uniform account in the Post Office Savings Bank now stood at £261 4s 4d. It was gratfying to see that the reel classes and the dances had been well supported as they were the main source of revenue. The annual ball was a great success, over 700 being present. During the year the band was sorry to say good-bye to a past president and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Laurenson. In conclusion, he thanked all who had assisted to make the year the success it had been; with special reference to the women’s committee, and others who came forward to assist With the ball. Thanks were due to the winter show directors, Hawera Borough Council, auditor (Mr. E. K. Cameron), Mr. D. McCormick for the use of furniture, the Press and all honorary members for their help, and to the employers who have shown consideration in the granting of leave, to the bandsmen on many occasions. The report was completed with special mention of the services rendered by the secretary and drum-major, Mr. Nairn. The greater part of the work fell .on Mr. Naim. Officers elected were: Drum-major, Mr. J. R. Nairn; pipe-major, Mr. B. Henson; pipe-sergeant, Mr. R. W. Haddow; deputy pipe-sergeant, Mr. I. Campbell; pipe-corporal, Mr. A. Wards; drum-ser-geant, Mr. O. Quin; drum-corporal, Mr. E. Velvin; custodian, Mr. J. R. Naim; president, Mr. C. H. Bowman; vicepresidents, Messrs. A, L. Campbell, W. G. Simpson, A. Kilpatrick and A. E. Linn; band representatives on executive, Messrs. E. Velvin and A. Bray; delegates to sports association, Messrs. J. R. Naim and A. L. Campbell; secretarytreasurer, Mr. J. R. Naim; auditor, Mr. E. K. Cameron, “The high standard set up by the band in former years has been well maintained,” said Mr. W. G. Simpson. '“The finances are still healthy and I must congratulate the officers on their capable administration during the year.” Valuable tuition had been given the band members by Mr. R. W. Haddow, said Mr. A. L. Campbell, and a great deal of the band’s success at competitions was 1 due to his expert coaching.

Congratulations on the band’s position were extended by Mr; J. E. Campbell, who said great work had been done by all concerned with the administration of the band. The women’s committee had done wonderful work throughout the year and played an important part on the social side. The establishment of a fund had placed the band in a good position. The secretary was voted an honorarium of £7 7s. ' An appeal for more co-operation from band members in the arrangements for reel classes was made by Mr. Nairn. After the meeting had concluded, a short concert programme was given and supper was served by a women’s committee. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. In connection with the Te Roti settlers’ and school picnic, a dance will be held in the Te Roti hall on Wednesday, March 20. A field day and demonstration under the auspices of the Hawera Jersey Cattle Club will be held at Mr. F. Hoskins’ farm, Matapu, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Mr. G. H. Bell, Oakura, will be the demonstrator. The Hawera County Council gives notice by advertisement that any person removing timber from the countv reserve at the Ohangai bridge will be i prosecuted.
