In No. 1 position, however, first on the right facing the sea, there was an arm of a small lagoon to cross which hampered the Abater-men of teams in that position. PATEA CHAMPIONS. HACKSHAW-SEARLE shield won. The senior championship held by Ohawe, went to another Taranaki team, Patea, Ohawe failing to gain a place in the third heat. There were nine competing teams, Island Bay (2)’, Lyall Bay, Worser Bay, Eastbourne, Castlecliff, Ohawe, East'End and Patea. The inclusion of the old Nelson Shield land, drill stopped some teams from entering, owing to lack of the necessary practice and in some cases teams that were slightly better in water work lost to superior land drill. Adams readied the buoy for Patea in the first heat ahead of Eddleston, but McFarlane nearly turned the tables on Milliken. Patea gained a lead of a point on East End,’-which was increased by two points in the line work and general care of patient. Castlecliff repeated its good work of the Gibson Cup heat in the, second heat, Naylor and Currie being the best support and .beltman respectively. The advantage was increased in general work and Castlecliff was easily first. Time placings .were well, separated in the third heat, Lyall Bay; with Williams and Cunningham, going out iu 5m 2s, compared to Ohawe’s 5m 58 3-5 s and . Bland Bay’s 6m 23 3-ss. Although five' and a-quarter points behind on water work, Island Bay won the heat. The final was decided on water work alone. Island Bay’s patient was first to reach the buoy but Patea made up oh the; beltman’s time. The Order was Patea, Islapd Bay, Castlecliff in both water work and general efficiency. , Results are:— • ■ \ > First Heat. ! Patea (A., B. Currie captain, R. Adams patient, W. -M. THIRD FOUR-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP. ; The Fitzroy club secured its third championship in four-man alarm events this year by winning the Gibson Cup. The success was gained largely through the splendid work of C. Maclean who, ■winning his heat easily, was caught unawares by the alarm in the'final. He made up time on the swim out with, a ■splendid effort, putting in a great burst over the last 50 yards to beat the Lyall Bay beltman by an exceedingly narrow margin. ‘ -

Thirteen teams were entered, two each from Lyall Bay, Worser Bay,-Island Bay, Patea, Castlecliff and Fitzroy and. one from Eastbourne. 1 '

Fitzroy easily secured, fastest time in the first ‘ heat, Maclean shooting away from Milliken over the final stages. The heat was decided on the beltman’s time, Patea, Castlecliff, and Lyall -Bay each securing 58% in the other drill departments against Fitzroy’s 58. Land work was .much better in > the second heat, Castlecliff secured 62 of the 70 and leading Island Bay by half a mark. Naylor was first out by '27s and Castlecliff won’ handsomely. , Fitzroy A was slow in' the' get-away in the final and- Maclean entered the water well behind the others. He also had the position with the lagoon to cross, but once past that he showed splendid speed, Voullaire swam well off his course and was third to reach tire buoy. Details are:— ■ First Heat. MARCH PAST SPECTACLE. qHAWE GAINS SECOND PLACE. ThO grand march past of the nine competing teams was equally as impressive as that of the national championship meeting at New Plymouth the previous week-end, six teams of the 14 of that parade being engaged at Castlecliff. Ohawe (J. Tarrant standard-bearer, S. Gorman beltman) was the only one of them to gain a place, being second to Island Bay, the holder, with Eastbourne third. The teams marched to music played by the Wanganui Garrison Band. Details were:— Island Bay (black with white badge), 122 paces to the 100 yards, 113 points, 1. ‘ Ohawe (black, with white diagonal stripes), 124 paces, 112% points, 2. Patea was placed fourth in the event. 0 - — MACLEAN CHAMPION BELTMAN. DECIDED ON GIBSON CUP FINAL. C. Maclean’s excellent swim that brought Fitzroy A the Gibson Cup in the four-man alarm also retained for him the West Coast beltman’s championship which he won last year. The title was decided in conjunction with the four-man event final. Maclean’s accident on the beach when the line became -tangled in the get-away nearly lost him the honour, and his final dash brought him home from Cunningham (Lyall Bay) by one-fifth of a second. R. Voullaire (Fitzroy B), who won the Taranaki beltman’s championship, was third, a position that Maclean filled in the national event last week at New Plymouth. arc:— C. Maclean (Fitzroy), 2m 59 3-ss, 1. A. Cunningham (Lyall Bay), 2m 59 4-ss, 2. R. Voullaire (Fitzroy), 3m 7 4-ss, 3. C. Naylor (Castlecliff), 3m 45 4-ss, 4. SURF RELAY RACE TO GONVILLE.
