BOYS AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

MOVEMENT PROGRESSES IN OHURA. RESULTS OF THE JUDGING. Very keen interest is taken in the schools of the Ohura district in the Boys and Girls’ Club movement, the final judging being carried out on the showground on People’s Day of the Ohura show. The calves were judged by Messrs. D. J. O’Sullivan (light breeds) and C. A. Marchant (heavy breeds). The condition of the calves generally showed that the children had given them every care, but some of the calves were hardly of high enough quality in type, Mr. D. J. O’Sullivan remarking that there was room for improvement in the class of some of the animals.

Mr. Duncan McKay, senior agricultural instructor, in his report stated that 200 pupils from fourteen schools participated in the competitions. Although the number competing was slightly below the record of last year, the year’s operations were considered entirely satisfactory and very good work had been done in all sections.

The club movement in the district was controlled by an executive of farmers and teachers with Mr. W. Sandison as president. Until the end of the year Mr. W. Landy was secretary and it was to his organising ability that much of the success was due. The movement was fathered by the Ohura A.P.H. and I. Association and the year’s work culminated with the championship judging of the stock on Thursday and a fine array of quality vegetables selected for competition by the children from their plots. In the calf-rearing competitions particularly good work was done with the heavy breeds, but the light breeds were on a par with those of previous years and the animals were generally well handled.

The plot work was also of a good standard, a majority of pupils again producing plots showing excellent work. Owing to the abnormal season it was difficult to have all the crops looking their best for show time, but a worthy exhibit had been staged. The cultivation was given due attention. Notebooks varied somewhat but on the whole gave a faithful record of careful observation and thorough and systematic work. Th® thanks of the executive were due to Mr. Noel Margan, Matiere, and Mr. C.. Blank, Tokirima, for assistance in. conveyance of calves. The awards were:— CHAMPIONSinPS.
