WORST WEATHER ESCAPED

The storm that played such havoc in other parts of Taranaki, was not felt in the Ohura valley, where ideal growing conditions prevailed. There was in Feb’ ruary a total rainfall of 8.84 inches, which fell on 11 days. A heavy, downpour on the 21st registered three inches, but there was little flooding. The rivers rose to a good height very rapidly, but dropped again just as quickly. Water was over the roads in one or two instances but' it was not enough to inter- , fere with traffic, and soon disappeared, The worst landslip was in the western . end of the gorge, where the road was blocked. The Ohura branch of the W.D.F.U. held a stall at the show at Niho Niho. Several ladies assisted, convened by Mrs. Rae (president). They had a fine display ,of articles (baskets, stools, etc.) made by the inmates of the Blind Institute. . A meeting of the Ohura Boy Scouts (under Scoutmaster' Muggrldge) was held in the town hall last Monday night. There was a good assembly to celebrate the Chief Scout’s birthday. The Revs. Walters and Alexander were present and addressed the Scouts. Mr. F. Johnston, a blind soldier, is holding a series of mission meetings in the Methodist church. Miss Margery Esdaile is holidaying in , the south. ■ Mrs. Arthur Wakefield is spending a holiday at Te Kuiti.
