CONTACT WITH AMERICA.

The decision of the Government to appoinf a trajje Qnd tourist cpnunissioner with headquarters in California will be generally approved. Recent indications have shown possibilities of trading between the Dominion and the United States that seemed qijjto unlikely a few months ago. It is true that the successful export of dairy produce from New Zealand to America has been due to special circumstances, but that fact need not detract from the wisdom of seeking fresh efforts for development of trade between the two countries. On many occasions visitors from the western States of America have commented upon the need for better representation and publicity fa their own land of New Zealand’s attractions as a tourist resort, and it is to be hoped the appointment now announced is but the first stage in a vigorous campaign for the development ’of new markets for Dominion produce and a greater share of American tourist traffic, It is a campaign to which the

Minister of Industry and Commerce, the Hon. R. Masters, has given much attention. He has stated on more than one occasion that the Ministry’s efforts in seeking new avenues of trading have not received the support they, warranted from the exporters of the Dominion. It is to be hoped the Minister’s warning will be heeded and that the organisations entrusted with the disposal of primary products will do their share in exploring new markets. Such work does not begin and end with State appointments. The tastes and wishes of customers must be studied, continuity of supply maintained, and all that is included in efficient private trading be used to supplement the efforts of the Government. If that determination is shown by all concerned there is every hope of satisfactory results being obtained.
