BRILLIANT BATTING DISPLAY. PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. After the whole of the first day had been lost through rain there was ■ further delay before the Plunket Shield cricket match between Otago and Canterbury was commenced on Saturday morning. Though no rain had fallen, during the night the wicket at Carisbrook was still very soft when the time at which the match was to have started approached and the captains decided not to commence play until noon. The wicket rolled out well and was easy when Otago, having won the toss, went in to bat. The weather remained fine throughout the day and in the afternoon a crowd of about 3000 was attracted, the takings at the gate being £lO9. : In spite of a brilliant display by Badcock, who scored 136, Otago was dismissed for the moderate total of 248 and, when an appeal against the light.was unexpectedly upheld at 5.45 p.m., Canterbury had lost one wicket for 40 runs.
