SHOW ABANDONED
NEW PLYMOUTH FIXTURE DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS Owing to the extensive damage done to the showgrounds at Waiwakaiho by the overflow of the river yesterday morning, the committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society decided during the afternoon to abandon this year’s show. This decision was reached after the committee had made a close examination of the damage. It was then seen that it would be quite impossible to repair the buildings and grounds in time for this year’s fixture. It tf&s decided- to concentrate upon next year’s show, which would be the society’s diamond jubilee fixture. The flood waters swept over the flat, leaving a scene of desolation. The two pig pavilions were totally wrecked while one dining room was badly damaged. In addition, the ring fence round the big oval was almost demolished and the whole of the top rail carried right away. One of the cattle pavilions had been undermined, making its condition unsafe. Many of the boundary and dividing fences were damaged beyond repair and silt, stones and rubbish strewn over the whole ground. The pipe crossing the Waiwakaiho River connecting the grounds with the borough water supply was carried away.
