PATEA ESCAPES LIGHTLY
SUBSIDENCE OF FILLING VESSEL UNABLE TO ENTER Patea escaped lightly compared with other parts of the province. The worst damage was to the filling on the approach to the main road bridge. Some of the filling subsided yesterday morning and traffic was held up for some time. The damage was not particularly serious, however. The Patea River carried a huge volume of storm water and brought down a vast amount of debris, including some huge logs. Under the circumstances it was quite impossible for the motor-vessel In-, aha to make port and she had to stand off the entrance to the harbour.
