CRICKETERS’ VISIT

MATIERE WINS NARROWLY. NEW PLYMOUTH TEAM DEFEATED. On Sunday a game of cricket was played on the Matiere Domain between the 8.0.8. cricket club and the Matiere team. The visitors, who had to make the long journey from New Plymouth to Matiere, left New Plymouth late on Saturday evening to arrive at Matiere in the early hours of Sunday morning. The visitors scored 104 runs, Ford scoring a vigorous 61, including four sixes and seven fours. Stewart 12 was the only other double-figure scorer. Bowling for Matiere, H. Fauchelle took five wickets for 14 and J. Hearfield four for 21. At the afternoon tea adjournment the Matiere eleven had scored 105 runs for nine wickets, thus winning the match by 3 wickets. Completing the innings after tea the visiting captain tried out some new slow bowlers, with the result that J. Hearfield, whose score ,was 40 not out when the game was won at the interval, proceeded to score 61 more runs in five overs, and then retired with his total at 101. One over from Phillips produced 30 runs, an over from Stewart 21 runs and an over from Anchor 15 runs, and Hearfield’s score included six sixes, one five and six fours. A. V. Ross, as opening bat, scored a valuable 20 runs, while J. V. Ross hit vigorously at the end of the innings for 16 not out. Parkinson and Avery bowled well to secure six wickets for 38 and three for 37 respectively, keeping the Matiere batsmen very quiet until the visitors’ score was passed and the bowlers changed.
