IMPROVING AN INDUSTRY.

The discussions at the annual conference of the North Taranaki branch of the Dairy Factory Managers’ Association were further evidence of the value Of the association to the dairy industry. The reports made and information given by experts and the questions asked or suggestions made had all the same alm. They were all for the purpose of improving the quality of New Zealand dairy produce. It was to note that in the opinion of graders in New Zealand and the Deputy-Director of the Dairy Division, Mr. G. M. Valentine, who has recently visited Great Britain, there had been a distinct improvement in the butter and cheese exported of late from the Dominion. For that improvement the factory managers are entitled to full credit, and that they should devote the annual meeting of their association to learning where weaknesses exist and how they may be overcome defiotes an interest in their work beyond that of providing them with a means of livelihood. With the improvements it is hoped td bring about in the supply of only firstclass milk and cream to the factories it is to be hoped that some of the difficulties of manufacture will be overcome. A striking feature in the addresses of Dr. Whitehead and Messrs. Valentine, Veale and Robertson was the importance of what might seem to the layman quite unimportant trifles. Yet upon attention to such “trifles,” on the farm as well as in the factory, depends the quality of the commodity for export. Naturally a good deal of the discussion was of a technical nature, but the keenness with which expert advice was received, the desire to understand its' implificatibns, and, most of all, the improvement already attained, make it evident that in the factory managers the industry has, speaking generally, a body of men who have the ability and the desire to tender the best possible service.
