GIRL KILLED ON ROAD

CORONER SUGGESTS NEGLIGENCE EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. ' By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The unusual circumstances of an accident which led to the death of a 14-years-old girl, Evelyne Hollinshead, Mangere, were investigated at an inquest held before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., today. The child was knocked from her cycle on November 23 by a car driven by Mrs. Jessie Crunden, Mangere, and., her death occurred on December 10. • The cause of death was shock and haemorrhage following an operation to relieve the condition caused by a depressed fracture of the skull resulting from the accident. • .■ ' / , Constable Irddell, Onehunga, produced a statement made by the driver Of the car on the night of the accident. In the statement she said she was travelling on her correct side at about 15 miles an hour. When she was half-way down the road the left-hand door flew open. H?r purse was on the seat next to the door and she “made a grab at it” with one hand. The car swung over to the right, “It was only a second or two,” the statement' continued. “1 saw' two girls. One went to the right and the other to the left. I continued to the right as'l thought the girl would have been able to pass me.” ' . . In returning a verdict ih accordance with the medical evidence Mr. Hunt said the injuries had been caused through the girl being knocked down by a car which he was bound to' find was being negligently driven by Mrs. Crunden.
