STORMS IN BRITAIN
SEVERE GALES EXPERIENCED. DAMAGE CAUSED BY FLOODS. British Wireless. Rugby, Feb. 18. A gale of exceptional severity swept the British Isles during the week-end, and in many parts of England gusts exceeding 70 miles an hour were recorded. At Liverpool the speed of the wind reached 79 miles and at Croydon 73 miles. . The storm was accompanied by exceptionally heavy rainfall in the Lake district, where flooded rivers joined Lakes Windermere, Rydalwater and Grasmere. Much damage was done by floods and winds on land and sea. The crew of a small steamer driven ashore at Barrow was rescued by a breeches buoy.
