TARANAKI SUCCESS

NEW PLYMOUTH BANDSMAN. WINNER OF SOLO HORN SECTION. (By Telegraph.—Special to News.) Timaru, Last Night. Interest in the New Zealand band contest to-day was centred on the solos. Sid Woods (New Plymouth) succeeded in the horn section, the judge remarking that it was his tone and quality that had won him the prize, the leading players being very much on a par. The weather was much improved, the second night of the B grade selections being taken in the open air. As on Tuesday opinions were very much divided as to which was on top on Wednesday night in the A grade, but it was generally felt that three bands stood out, although there was some wonderful playing by at least four or five, Port Nicholson, Timaru, In ver car j." 11 and St. Kilda being the favourites.

The bass solo taken this afternoon produced good playing. D. Owen (New Plymouth) did very well for a first attempt, being placed fourth, three points behind the dinner.

In the B grade second selection misfortune dogged the footsteps of the Taranaki Regimental-Municipal Band, several serious mishaps putting them right out of the running. These were caused by exceptional nervousness. Results were:—
