TOKO SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

SCOUT AND GUIDE SERVICE. At the monthly meeting of the Toko school committee there were present Messrs. Murray (chairman), G. Were (secretary), Needham, Caskey and E. The headmaster reported that school re-opened with an attendance of 95, the roll number at the end of last year being 101. , It was decided not to close the school earlier during the hot weather but to take part of the afternoon session for swimming instruction. The chairman reported that during the holidays certain improvements had been carried out to the baths which were now in good order, a plentiful fresh water running through all the time. , _ . The observance of Founder s Day at Toko was marked by a good attendance of Scouts, Guides, Cubs and the general public. A service was held a week early as next week the Guides will be at Wellington to meet Lord and Lady Baden-Powell. In an inspiring address Mr. J. B. Hine explained the origin of the" Guide movement as he said they all knew how the. Scouts originated. He eulogised the work of the founders, Lord and Lady Baden-Powell and other leaders of the Scout and Guide movement, and exhorted his hearers to endeavour to live up to the principles of the Scout and Guide laws. Major Sandford gave figures showing the strength of the movement in all parts of the world. Major Urquhart read a special lesson. Miss C. Milne presided at the piano. _____
