LOST TROPHY FOUND
RETURNED AFTER 25 YEARS. SEQUEL TO NEWSPAPER STORY. Lost 25 years ago at Manaia, a football trophy was restored yesterday to the possession of the owner’s mother. The story of the restoration is a peculiar one, arising from a News item. On Tuesday Mrs. J. Prestidge, Hawera, read in the Daily News an account of the visit to Taranaki of Mrs. Chisnail, a Canterbury pioneer. She recalled that many years ago she had found a miniature gold football on which the name of Chisnail was inscribed. The paragraph stated that one of Mrs. Chisnall’s sons was at one time a prominent footballer and Mrs. Prestidge thought the trophy might have some connection with the family. Accordingly ghe communicated with Mrs. Chisnall, who was staying with her grand-daugh-ter, Mrs. W. Ricketts, at Eltham, and Mrs. Chisnall recalled that her son Charlie had lost a similar trophy many years ago. It was inscribed with his name “C. H. Chisnall” and was won while he was a member of the Malvern Football Club. It was subsequently lost while Mr. Chisnall was on a visit to his brother at Manaia about 25 years ago and the club decided to replace the lost article with another trophy. Mrs. Chisnall, who is now 85 years of age, was naturally pleased at the recovery of her son’s lost trophy and took it back to Christchurch with her yesterday.
