WAITARA SCHOOL
MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING. REPORT ON SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. The monthly meeting of the Waitara school committee was held on Monday night. Those present were Messrs. W. B. Glasgow (chairman), R. H. Pickering, P. Appleby, A. Chadwick, A. E. Kettle, L. Old, E. R. Pryme, R. J. Armstrong, A. S. McGregor (secretary). The headmaster, Mr. F. R. S. Bullen, reported that the school re-opened with a roll number of ; 402 (191 boys and 211 girls). There were 23 new admissions, of whom 14 were six-year-olds. The average attendance for the first week was 379, and for. the second week 375. All members of the staff returned except Miss Edwards, who resigned. Miss Bell was relieving, and a permanent teacher
would arrive at the end of the month. The inspector visited the school on February 12. The annual swimming sports would be held in the baths this afternoon and a week later the school sports would be held on the Camp Reserve. It was proposed to hold the school concert at the end of the term. It was decided that the headmaster make arrangements for the use of the Theatre Royal for the concert. The question of repairs to the gramophone or the purchase of a new machine was left to Mr. Armstrong to report upon at the next meeting. Mr. Glasgow stated that there was no intention of holding a school picnic this term. Messrs. Kettle and Chadwick were appointed a visiting committee for the month. Mr. Pryme reported that a complaint had been made to him about the number of new exercise books which were required by standard 4 pupils. He asked if . eight need be bought at once. The headmaster said the books were neces-
sary, as one was required for each subject. The chairman and Mr. Bullen said that in any necessitous cases school books could be supplied free of charge, but had to be returned at the end of the year.
