EARLY SETTLER
DEATH OF MR. C. W. CHILMAN, CONNECTION WITH TARANAKI. The death occurred recently of Mr. Charles William Chilman, an old resident of Wellington, and formerly manager of the Te Aro branch of the Bank of New Zealand. He was bom at Brompton, England, and was educated at the Merchant Taylors’ School,. London. : In 1864 Mr. Chilman’s family settled in Taranaki, having arrived from England in the ship Scimitar. After attending several private schools in the province Mr. Chilman was apprenticed to the printing trade. Subsequently :he joined the Telegraph Department and served as a telegraphist in various part s of the Dominion. ‘
He then farmed for a time, and eventually settled at Wellington in 1876. Two years later he joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, and filled the positions of teller, accountant and relieving officer. In 1890 Mr. Chilman was appointed manager of the Te Aro branch of the Bank of New Zealand, a position he retained until 1916, when he retired on superannuation. , Mr. Chilman had many friends and relations at New Plymouth, being connected with several of the pioneer families of the province.
