HAWERA BOROUGH

COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING. OFFICERS’. REPORTS RECEIVED. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, presiding. Councillors present were Messrs. W. R. Butler, A. Reid, L. H. Clapham, A. K. North, E. K. Cameron, R. M. Richard, and W. J. Bright. The foreman (Mr. J. Rowe) reported that the usual maintenance work had been attended to. The seven horse-power motor installed in the Glover-Waihhi Road station in October last, burnt out on February 4. A temporary motor had been placed in this station by the power board. Glover Road, from Waihi Road to Princes Street, had been patched and four chains were top-dressed and edges made up. Of Rowe Street flanks of about eight chains had been graded, metalled and top-dressed, at a cost of about £146. The unemployed were engaged on the new cemetery road and at Nolantown. With January, 1934, figures in parentheses, the public library figures, according to Miss H. Carson’s report, were as follow: Receipts, £46 17s lOd (£45 18s 9d); subscribers, 455 adult (458). 53 intermediate (45), 174 juvenile (170); total, 682 (673) new books, 26 (46); withdrawals, 0 (57); issues, 5919 adult (5660), 506 juvenile (516), a total of 6425 (6176). There were 27 new members in the adult department, an unusually large number for January, but on the other hand, the resignations also totalled 27. The receipts were larger than for last January, while the book issues showed a considerable increase on last year’s figures. The ranger, Mr. C. E. Baker, reported that he had warned three owners of wandering stock.

Stock slaughtered during January at the abattoirs, reported the town clerk, comprised 4 bullocks, 85 cows, 46 heifers, 323 sheep, 57 lambs, 23 calves and 47 pigs. The rent was £7 12s and the fees £B4 15s, being £8 6s 3d less than in the same month of last year. The total fees for the current financial year were £25 17s 6d less than those for the corresponding period of last year.
