ELTHAM SWIMMING

MIDGETS WIN RELAY RACE. POLO MATCH TO NEW PLYMOUTH. Club night at the Eltham baths again attracted a full bench of spectators and the events were full of interest, although several of the most prominent swimmers were absent. »

The inter-house relay contest was won by the Midgets, a team of juveniles who gained the cup and medals for the first time amidst popular enthusiasm. Two teams from the New Plymouth club competed and Dr. Saunders, the president, thanked them for entering the competition in the absence of some of the usual teams. _ A polo match between New Plymouth B and Eltham resulted in a win for New Plymouth by three goals to nil. The teams were: New Plymouth B: J. Simpcon, R. and D. Gayton, B. Dudley. J. Davies, B. Meredith, P. Whitehead. Eltham: N. Glentworth, G. Williams, D. Shepard, A. Bennett, C. Ricketts, W. Ware, J. Whiting. The visitors soon had the defending goalkeeper in action and the second attempt produced a goal. Williams carried play towards the posts but was unable to complete. The ball returned to the other end, where the visitors shot two more goals. Glentworth repelled a couple of shots and play drifted back to New Plymouth’s posts, but without penetration of the defence. After the changeover Eltham combined well to work up the baths, but long throws sent the ball back to worry the Eltham goalie. Glentworth resisted every shot and one hit a post. No score was made in the second spell. The goals were scored by R. Gayton (2) and J. Davies (1).

Gower (scr) 3. 50 yards intermediate: K. Horrocks 1, W. Ware 2, L. Murray 3. 50 yards men’s handicap: K. Horrocks (2s) 1, D. Shepard (2s) 2, W. Ware (4s) 3. Women’s dive: Miss M. Gower 1. Miss P. Peebles 2, Miss J. Carson 3. Ribbon dive: J. Gower 1, H. Frost 2, D. Shepard 3. Men’s dive: J. Gower 1, L. Murray 2, H. Frost 3. Inter-house relay:—First heat: Midgets (19s) 1, High School Boys (10s) 2, New Plymouth B (scr) 3. Second heat: High School Old Boys (6s) 1, New Plymouth A (scr) 2. Final: Midgets 1, High School Boys 2, New Plymouth A 3. The Midgets team comprised P. Cooper, J. Carson, L, Murray and J. Haworth.
