The Hon. S. G. Smith left New Plymouth yesterday for Wellington. Overseas visitors at the Hotel Criterion, New Plymouth, include Messrs. W. J. Alford and H. C. Creedy, London. Colonel Fletcher and Mr. C. W. Fletcher, Wellington, are staying at the Hotel Criterion, New Plymouth. Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., was last night elected president of the Taranaki Justices of the Peace Association.

Nurse Peterson, New Plymouth Plunket Society, returned yesterday from her annual leave.

The Hon. Mr. Justice Blair was elected patron of the Taranaki Justices of the Peace Association at the annual meeting last night. Mr. C. N. Haslam, newly-appointed senior inspector of schools in Taranaki, was a guest at the New Plymouth Rotary Club’s weekly luncheon yesterday. Messrs. D. F. C. Saxton, C. W. Hodge and W. C. Weston left New Plymouth yesterday to attend the annual Press conference, which is being held in Rotorua this week.

Mr. E. Abbey Jones, of the Southland News, Invercargill, left New Plymouth yesterday for Rotorua, where he will attend the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association conference.

The death of Mr. E. J. Loxton, K.C., aged 71, is reported in a Sydney cable. He was one of the most versatile lawyers in the State. He was a member of Parliament for six years. Miss M. Greenwell, general secretary of the Y.W.C.A., New Plymouth, and Mesdames Alexander, S. R. Morley, Chivers and Miss M. Jackett left yesterday for Wellington to attend the National Association Convention. Mr. A. G. Elliott arrived at New Plymouth last night from Blenheim to take up the position of instructor in agriculture to the Department of Agriculture in North Taranaki in succession to Mr. J. M. Smith. Mr. Elliott was accompanied by his wife. The Rev. Fred Copeland left New Plymouth yesterday to attend the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand at Dunedin on Thursday. Messrs. C. E. Bellringer and J. T. Griffin will attend as the representatives of the New Plymouth circuit.

Mr. Justice Reed, Sir Donald McGavin, Dr. T. Griiy, Mrs. A. I. Fraer and Messrs. D. G. A. Cooper, John Alexander and B. L. Dallard, members of the Prisons Board, are visiting .New Plymouth. They are staying at the Hotel Criterion.

Sympathy with the headmaster, Mr. W. A. Brown, who recently met with a cycle . accident, was expressed by the West End jubilee general committee last night. It was stated that Mr. Brown was making good progress towards recovery, but that it would be some time before he could resume his duties.

Mr. Hugh Baily, New Plymouth, will leave next week for the Dominion Rotary Convention at Timaru. He will proceed from there to Wellington and England and will attend the World Rotary Convention in Mexico. He expects to be away for seven months, and leave of absence for this period was granted him yesterday at the Rotary Club lunch. . Mr. N. P. Lealand, of the New Plymouth Harbour Board office staff, who is to be married to-morrow, was the recipient of two presentations yesterday. Harbour Board office officials met Mr. Lealand yesterday afternoon, and the New Plymouth Swimming Club, of which he is captain, extended congratulations at the weekly meeting at the New Plymouth baths last night. The death has occurred of Mr. Edward Thomas Menlove, aged 63 years, states a Press Association message from Nelson. Mr. Menlove was bom at Dunedin and had been sheepfarming in Marlborough for many years before retiring to Nelson. His father was Mr. Edward Menlove, Windsor Park, Oamaru. Mr. Menlove interested himself in work for returned soldiers. His participation in sport included golf, bowling and croquet. Mr. Menlove leaves a widow. Mrs. A. P. Burnes, Nelson, and Mrs. A. C. Wilson, Christchurch, are sisters. An elder brother, Mr. William Menlove, lives in Southland.
