CROQUET CONTEST

EVENT COMMENCED AT HAWERA. RESULTS OF OPENING GAMES. Good progress was made with the opening games of the South Taranaki Croquet Association’s eighth annual tournament, which commenced on the Hawera and Park lawns in ideal weather on Monday. Ninety entries will cause play to continue all this week and probably into next week. All the South Taranaki clubs are well represented and it is expected competition will be keen. The greens are rather tricky owing to the dryness of the season, though they are in splendid order considering recent conditions. Prominent competitors are A. J. Gibbs, Patea, who holds the North Island and South Tarariaki championships, and J. M. Clague, Taranaki champion, who is defending his title. Before the start of play on Monday Mrs. A. V. Tait, Kaponga, president of the association, extended a welcome to players assembled at the Hawera lawns. Good progress was made yesterday. In the handicap doubles one semi-final was decided. Mesdames Masters and Lester. Patea, defeated Mrs. A. Murdoch and Miss Tait, Hawera Park, after the latter pair had created a surprise by defeating A. J. Gibbs and Mrs. Maxwell on Monday. J. M. White, greenwarden, with a handsome bowl bag on behalf of members on Saturday. Mr. Scown referred to the amount of work done by Mr. White to make the green one of the best in Taranaki. Messrs. P. Bourke, C. Sheahan, W. Paterson and A. E. Wainwright endorsed the president’s remarks. Mr. White replied. The health of Mr. P. Bourke, who had done well in the Dominion bowling championship singles, and Mr. W. T. Lamb were also drunk. The club singles matches resulted as follows:White 20 v. Glenny 17, Bourke 21 v. Glenny 17, Sheahan 21 v. Scown 17. ‘SHE LOVES ME NOT.” BING CROSBY AGAIN. Paramount’s laughter-and-song picture “She Loves Me Not” comes to the Hawera Opera House to-day, with Bing Crosby and Miriam Hopkins in co-star-ring roles, and Kitty Carlisle featured. The picture also boasts a supporting cast of exceptional talent, including such seasoned players as Warren Hymer, Lynne Overman, Judith Allen, George Barblei and Vince Barnett.
