INGLEWOOD SCHOOL

IMPROVEMENT TO GROUNDS. OFFICIAL OPENING TO-MORROW. Inglewod now possesses a school and grounds of which any district might be proud, and that residents of Inglewood appreciate that fact is shown by the keen interest they are taking in the comprehensive work of converting the area into one of the finest school grounds in the province. Those who attend the official opening to-morrow afternoon will realise what a transformation has been made. The school, which is of the latest design of the Taranaki fresh-air type, possessing no corridors and with ventilation so arranged that there is absolutely no draught, southern lighting with plenty of light and each room heated with its own heating unit, presents a striking appearance. It is on an area of 11 acres of land. A few months ago that was all hollows and lumps, but a great change has been made. In the front a considerable area has been levelled and turfed for a playing and assembly area, while at the back of the school an area has been levelled and turfed, with the faR away from the school towards a hill, which will lend itself readily for planting with shelter trees or, if necessary, can be removed- to fill in a blind creek. The blind creek has been slab drained and covered, and the sides have been graded and sloped so that if the decision is against removing the hill they can be planted. Across this blind creek a playing area for the boys has been levelled, entailing considerable work with scoops and tractors to remove the mounds and fill 'the hollows, while a plane did its share of the levelling, the whole area being then re-sown. It was first ploughed and disced. There will be ample room for cricket and football. It has not been definitely decided yet whether the hill is to be levelled to provide with an area of ground at the back another basketball area, or whether the ground at the back will be utilised for the school garden. It is remarkable that so much should have been achieved. The committee set out with a definite plan and has worked enthusiastically on it The school will be officially opened tomorrow afternoon by Mr. J. A. Valentine, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, and it is anticipated that Mr. Lambourne, Director of Education, will also be present.
