KAPONGA SCHOOL

PARENTS’ DAY SUGGESTED. EARLY CLOSING BENEFICIAL. The action of the chairman and headmaster in closing the school at 12.30 p.m. daily during February was confirmed at the monthly meeting of the Kaponga school committee on Monday. The chairman, Mr. C. H. Brewer, presided, and there were present Messrs. C. N. Gordge, H. C. Norgate, J. Taylforth and C. A. Corder, secretary. The headmaster, Mr. A. T. Honore, reported that the roll number for the new term was 92. Sickness had been responsible for defections. The average attendance was 85. The visiting committee for January, Messrs. Brewer and Corder, reported everything to be in good order. The display of flowers was very fine and the school garden was in a splendid condition. There still remained a considerable amount to be burned, and it vzas decided to hold a working bee. Messrs. Gordge and Norgate were appointed a visiting committee for February. ■ f ~ A communication from the Taranaki Education Board dealt with drinking water supplied to school children. No action was necessary, said the chairman, the water supply from the taps being considered satisfactory. A suggestion from the teachers that a combined garden party and parents’ day be held in March was supported by the committee, and it was decided to arrange the day.

The secretary reported having met with a good response from parents regarding transport for the annual picnic at Opunake. Shopkeepers agreed to close their premises about 10 o’clock. The committees representative on the dental clinic, Mr. J. Taylforth, stated that the clinic was in working order again, and a start had been made with the treatment of pupils. Regarding the loss of treatment by pupils last year owing to the absence of the dental nurse, the Eltham committee had decided that where a child had altogether missed treatment it would be eligible this year.
