WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Mangatoki: The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday. Mrs. A. E. Mahon presided over a fair attendance. Regret was expressed at the absence of Miss Gwaldys Beech through illness and wishes for a speedy recovery were voiced. Suggestions 'were invited for the next six months’ programme to be ready for the annual meeting. Preliminary arrangements were made for the annual picnic which is again to be held at Taumata Park, Eltham. During the evening members knitted peggy Squares for a quilt. The competition for pikelets, judged by Mrs. and Miss Phillips, resulted: Miss Jean Burke 1, Mrs'. A. E. Mahon 2, Miss O. Bootten 3. Hostesses for the evening were Miss N. Davies, Mrs. and Miss Gatenby.
Kaitake: The first meeting for 1935 was held on February 7, when Mrs. E. Laurence presided over a fair attendance. Miss Astbury (Mangatoki) was welcomed as a visitor. Arrangements were made for the March meeting and the election procedure was explained. A competition for the best plate of scones was judged by Mrs. M. Sefton, who awarded the prize to Mrs. G. Watson. Mrs. Mattheys arranged a competition entitled “A Fish Wedding.” Mrs. Bagley was the winner. The subject for roll call was “What would I do with a gift of £2000? Members of the committee served afternoon tea.
