PASSING ON CORNER
COLLISION BETWEEN TAXI-CABS. OVERTAKING DRIVER FINED. Edward Redding Lobban, Stratford, driver of one of the two taxis which collided at a New Plymouth intersection at 3 a.m. on December 23, was yesterday fined 30s (costs 10s) by Mr. VZ. H. Woodward, S.M., on a charge of approaching a corner so as to pass another car at a speed greater than six miles per hour. Lobban, for whom Mr. V. Gregory appeared, pleaded guilty. Lobban, said Senior-Sergeant Turner, was driving his taxi up Eliot Street towards Stratford and overtook another taxi driven by G. E. Grover as it was turning into Lemon Street, Grover having given the necessary signal. . There was a collision in which a certain amount of damage was done to each car. Nobody had been injured, and both cars were travelling at a moderate speed. It was a technical breach rather than a serious offence, said Mr. Gregory. There was no traffic about and Lobban sounded his horn vigorously as he overtook Grover, who was travelling at about 25 miles per hour. Lobban had stated that Grover had not driven in a sane manner, had not given a signal, and had begun to turn when the two cars were abreast. Lobban arranged for both to go to the police station but Grover did not put in an appearance. Senior-Sergeant Turner said that in Lobban’s statement he said he saw Grover’s signal. Lobban had stated definitely that he had not, replied Mr. Gregory. The senior-sergeent explained that Grover had visited the station next day and'he was satisfied there was nothing against him.
