TARANAKI SWIMMING

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP ARRANGEMENTS. POSSIBLE VISIT BY FRENCHMEN. Taranaki championship dnd club car-., nival dates were decided ’on at the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Swimming Centre executive committee at New Plymouth last night. The possibility of a visit to the province by the two French swimmers, Jean Taris and Poussard, was also mentioned. There were present Messrs. F. J. Eggleton (chairman), J. W. Moorhead (Fitzroy), C. Allen (New Plymouth), A. J. Ryan (Hawera), T. J. . Haughton (Stratford), H. St. George (Waitara), L. Kerr (Fitzroy), A. J. Bennett (Eltham), A. C. Sims (East End), R. Crossman (Inglewood) and J. Devine (honorary secretary). The Okato club was granted February 16 for its carnival. Stratford was allotted February 21 for a second carnival, which it was hoped Lyall Bay swimmers would attend. Hawera’s next carnival will be held on February 20, Lyall Bay members to be present there, too. ' The East End club lodged a protest against Fitzroy being granted the 440 j yards championship final without EastEnd being notified, East End having been allotted the 440 yards race hr' the first place.

Fitzroy had approached Mr. Devine and himself for permission to run the final, which was granted, said Mr. Eggleton. There had been so manv entries that heats had been necessary at the East End carnival. • , Mr. Sims explained that a definite ruling was wanted for the future. The club had had the heats and had in mind axi application for another carnival at which the final would be staged. No executive meeting had been held by the club yet and no application had been entered. He emphasised that there was no protest. Mr. Eggleton said that the centre had no idea that East End was running another carnival and Fitzroy had had no championship event allocated. He was not in favour of holding finals off for a considerable time and the swimmers themselves would not agree to swimming heats and the final on the one night. It was necessary to have a small executive committee to do what was best in any emergency.

The action of the chairman and secre tary was confirmed.

TOUR OF FRENCHMEN. The New Zealand council wrote asking whether support would be available from Taranaki if,~as hoped, a short New Zealand tour of the Frenchmen Taris and Poussard were arranged. The action of the chairman and secretary in asking for the allocation of dates to Taranaki was confirmed. Mr. Eggleton pointed out that if the tour were arranged no doubt the swimmers could make two Taranaki appearances, one at New Plymouth and one at Hawera. The Hawera club asked if the date of the Taranaki senior championship carnival at New Plymouth could be changed from Saturday, February -2, to a night during the week. Saturday being the late night in most Taranaki towns, the clubs concerned were unable to get swimmers away. Mr. Ryan said the Hawera club would probably be unable to send a team, as many of the swimmers were shop assistants. Mr. Haughton said Stratford would be able to get the team away blit large numbers of the Stratford public would be unable to attend. Mr. A. J. Bennett supported the request on behalf of Eltham.

The date of February 2 had been confirmed at the last meeting, said Mr. Eggleton, but if it could be done he thought the date should be changed. It was decided to alter the date to Thursday, February 7, at New Plymouth, the night after the junior and intermediate championships at Hawera. The selectors, Messrs. S. Bennett (north) and W. E. Kivell (south) will be instructed to select north and south polo teams to play on the night of the championships at New Plymouth. Arrangements for leam-to-swim week were set in train, clubs being asked to forward lists of instructors available. Mr. S. George asked for « ruling on his position regarding memberhsip of both the Fitzroy and Waitara clubs. A resident of Waitara, he had joined the Fitzroy club when the Waitara club was in recess, he said. Now that the Waitara club had been resuscitated he was swimming for it in inter-club carnivals but there was no polo team. As he die. not want to give up polo he asked that the centre should allow him to play for Fitzroy. On the motion of Mr. C. Allen, seconded by Mr. R. Crossman, St. George was given permission to join Fitzroy as an active member for polo only. Mr. Sims apologised for the East End polo team’s non-appearance «t Hawera on Friday night. The club haa failed to note the fixtures and did not know the match was on, he said. * Mr. A. Ryan said Hawera would be pleased to play East End if a date could be arranged. Mr. Eggleton’s action in granting the Fitzroy club permission to postpone. its carnival from Saturday until to-nigh on account of the weather was confirmed.
