ROWING AT THE PORT
DONALDSON TROPHY RACES. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB EVENTS. Although the weather on Saturday afternoon was not suited to good rowing, there were some good races in the heats for the Donaldson trophies. In the first heat F. Barlow (st.), J. Donaldson (3),’R. Burkett (2), R. Billing (bow) beat A. Burgess (str.), L. Rutherford (3), T. Murdock (2), P. Healy (bow). Both crews got away to a good start, Burgess having a slight advantage to the end of the wharf where, owing to a mishap to the rudder, the boat could not continue the race. The second heat resulted in a win for N. Frewin (str.), J. King (3), W. Lowry (2), H. Billing (bow) against A. Burgess (str.), L. Rutherford (3), T. Murdock (2), P. Healy (bow). Frewin’s crew went away well and took the lead to win by a length and a half. To overcome the bye, Burgess’ crew was permitted to row in the second heat. Tire final resulted in F. Barlow’s crew beating Frewin’s crew. Frewin’s crew Showed up early but Barlow, striking a faster rate, gained the lead from the end of the Newton King wharf and maintained it to finish first by half a length.
