CRICKET IN COUNTRY

MATIERE BEATS TUROTO AN INNINGS AND 73 RUNS. MATCH PLAYED AT NIHO NIHO. The Matiere cricket eleven defeated Turoto on the Niho Niho showgrounds on Sunday by an innings and 73 runs. Brett won the toss and sent Matiere in to bat on a slow but tricky wicket. H. Stoddart (16), H. Fauchelle (11), W. Baker (20), G. Rutherford (40) and G. Crozier (27) batted well to bring up a total of 132 runs for the loss of seven wickets. The tail failed, however, and the innings closed with 137 runs. Turoto opened disastrously, losing five wickets for two runs, and the other players batted little better, the whole team being out for 20. Turoto followed on but all the'wickets again felt cheaply, no scorer reaching double figures. Following are the details:—

CRICKET AT TAUMARUNUI.

WIN FOR ONGARUE ELEVEN.

Six Matiere cricketers Went to Taumarunui on Saturday to play for Ongarue against Taumarunui. Ongarue won by 223 runs to 70. There were some good scores by Matieke players, Rutherford making 51, S. Fullerton-Smith 49, E. Fauchelle 18 and H. Fauchelle 17. Rutherford also performed well with the ball, taking seven wickets for 35 runs, bowling unchanged. Hearfield took the remaining three wickets at a cost of. only six runs.
