BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP

AN ELECTRIC LAMP STANDARD. Here is a handy table standard for an eledtric lamp which you can make with ordinary whitewood. When finished, it would be an excellent present for mother. For the pedestal, A, two pieces of planed wood twelve inches long, one and a half inches wide and half an inch thick will be required. Two more pieces, the same length end half an inch square, will also be needed, and these are glued and nailed between the other two pieces to form a hollow square pedestal, as shown in diagram B. Sink the holes for the nails, as shown, and after these are

driven in, glue in little wood plugs, the tops of which can be levelled with a chisel. Cut the two base parts C and D from wood five eighths of an inch thick, and plane these carefully on both sides and edges. In the centre of part C, cut a square hole to fit the bottom end of the pedestal. Screw the two base parts together from underneath, as shown in diagram E, so that no screw holes show on top. Tire four square feet, cut from wood half an inch thick, can be screwed on under the four corners of the base so that they project half an inch on two sides, as indicated in diagram E. . Before fixing the pedestal, make a three-eighths of an Inch hole through the centre of part D, and then glue the bottom end of the pedestal in place. Four screws can then be driven ip from underneath, as shown in the diagrams. The cap F, which is two dnd a quarter inches square and half an inch thick can be fixed by two screws, the holes for which should be countersunk and plugged. Make a hole in the centre of the cap just large enough to allow the end of a lamp holder to be screwed in tightly. Before this is done, however, a suitable length of electric light flex must be threaded through the pedestal, and the bared ends attached to the little ter? minal screws inside the lamp holder. A wall plug or bayonet fitting can be attached to the other end of the flex. Give the finished standard a coating of cellulose paint, or enamel, of any desired shade, and fit a shade holder to the lamp socket by means of the screwed ring which is usually supplied with this fitting.
