SAVED BY CHIMPANZEE

There is a dumb animal in the Berlin Zoo which inspires its keeper with more enthusiasm than the whole Government put together. The silent hero is a chimpanzee which shares a cage with Bobby, a famous gorilla which has always been regarded as good tempered.' But the other day, when, the keeper was in their cage, Bobby suddenly knocked him down, bit his leg several times, and was hugging him as fiercely as a bear when the chimpanzee leaped to the rescue.

Picking up the' keeper’s whip, the chimpanzee gave Bobby such a thrashing that the huge ape dropped its victim and became at once mild-tempere-i again. Tire keeper had to go to hospital: but he is alive, and there is little doubt that he owes his life to the intelligence of the chimpanzee, BIG GAME HUNTERS’ TALES THE MONSTER BUFFALOS “Many people think of America when buffalos are mentioned.” My big-game hunter friend shot a glance at a picture in his photograph album. “But actually, of course, buffalo come from Africa and bison from America.” I nodded, and noticed that the hunter was gently stroking a terrible scar on the left side of his face. “You seem to be thinking of something in particular?” I said. “Yes,” came the reply, “I am. It concerns the most terrible adventure of m.v life, which occurred by the shores of lake Bangweolo in the darkest part of the Dark Continent. “We had gone out—a friend and myself—in search of some huge buffalos which the natives said were to be found there, and one day just after breakfast we were surprised by three enormous brutes. For A moment or two we were thunderstruck. Then, I fired, an animal was wdunded, and the three bolted, with us after them. “For three hours we followed the trail of those buffalo. Then the grass suddenly parted and the wounded beast faced us. Firing together, we dodged to avoid the charge but both of us slipped and the next instant that monster was on us-” The speaker shuddered. “There’s not much more to tell,” he went on, “except to say that I didn’t do any more hunting for months after that and s. . .” my friend s voice faltered. “My gallant companion lies buried on the shores of Lake Bangweolo.” •
