SPORT OF ROWING

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB

CREWS TRAINING FOR REGATTA.

ALLOTMENT OF CHALLENGE CUPS.

(By

"Stroke.”)

Saturday, January 26, promises to be a gala day at Ngamotu beach and the breakwater. The New Plymouth Rowing Club Committee has arranged a very attractive programme of rowing and novel-

ty events, as follows: Trial races between Clifton and New Plymouth for novice fours, youth fours, lightweight maiden fours (lOst and under), open maiden fours, junior fours arid pair oar. The New Plymouth crews are as follow: Youth fours: F. Barlow (str), T. Murdock (3), R. Rosser (2), J. Durdle (bow). Novice fours: W. Lowry (str), J. Alills (3), R. Burkett (2), P. Healy (bow). Lightweight maiden fours: F. Barlow (str), L. Rutherford (3), M. Keenan (2), J. Durdle (bow). Open maiden fours: N. Frewin (str), S. Billing (3), M. Keenan (2), L. Rutherford (bow). Junior fours: H. Billing (str), J. King (3), J. Donaldson (2), A. Burgess (bow); N. Frewin (Str), S. Billing (3), M. Keenan (2), L. Rutherford (bow). Crews for the pair oar races will be picked later..

Along Foreshore. In the pair oar events the course will be along the waterfront from Bayley Road, where the starter's dinghy will be moored, to the boathouse. The four oar events will be rowed over the regatta course but the finishing line will be on the shoreward side of the Newton King wharf. A gun will be used for starting and finishing all races. Canoe trophy races will be held along the foreshore for single and double canoeists, and it is anticipated there will be large entries in these events. There Will be a first prize (value 7s 6d) and a second prize (value 2s 6d) for all canoe races, for Which entry Will be free. The novelty events (for oarsmen only) will be held on’the beach near the boathouse. They will be as follow: 100 yards handicap, 75 yards handicap, 50 yards handicap, tug-of-war, lazy stick, and sack football. Clifton Club’s Offer.

The Clifton Rowing Club’s offer to bring a full complement of oarsmen to contest these trial races Shows a spirit worthy of the best traditions of sportsmanship and it is hoped this friendly gesture will be the fore-runner of many similar interchanges of visits between the clubs.

It is to be regretted that the weather on New Year’s Day precluded any possibility of the regatta programme being carried out and it is the‘intention of the New Plymouth club committee to ask the Wanganui Rowing Association to allot the McLeod Cup to the Wanganui regatta and the Collett Cup to the Clifton regatta. Rowing activities at New Plymouth during the past two weeks have been quiet but a good deal of very necessary repair work to the plant has been carried out. The crewte ate noW settling down to hard training as the weekly trophy races are to commence again tomorrow, when the Donaldson trophies will be rowed.

Rowing at Wanganui. “New Plymouth usually provides selectors with something to work on, although many crews are often formed by members who are able to go rather than those who deserve a seat in the boat,” says a Wanganui exchange, “in past years Wanganui has held its regatta during January and the two fixtures have followed in quick succession. With ho race at New Plymouth and with the Wanganui regatta about seven weeks away, some kind of programme, either interclub or club racing, Would probably be welcomed. Wellington’s regatta, of course, will be held on February 16 and nd doubt several crews from this centre will be competing.” / Auckland Patron.

Mr. Ernest Davis, patron Of the Auckland Rowing Association, has been nominated to succeed the late Mr. H. W. Hudson as president of the New Zealand Association.- « Accident at Picton.

P. Abbott, of the Petohe Club, had ah unfortunate accident at the Picton regatta on New Year’s Day, and it is unlikely that he will be able to do any more rowing for a time.
