PENALTY FOR A GAMING HOUSE. £4OO ALREADY PAID OUT IN FINES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Jan. 15. Despite the earnest pleading of his counsel, Douglas Hipkins, aged 40, tobacconist, was sent to gaol to-day for a month for using his premises as a common gaming house. Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., said this was accused’s fourth conviction and he had already paid £4OO in fines. That being so it would be idle and useless to impose any punishment that would not be a deterrent. ‘
