ELTHAM SWIMMING

ARRANGEMENTS FOR CARNIVAL. PREPARATION OF PROGRAMME. Preliminary arrangements for a swimming carnival at Eltham were put. in hand at a meeting of the Eltham Amateur Swimming Club committee on Friday night. It was decided to prepare a programme that would attract competitors from other clubs. A sub-committee was authorised to obtain suitable prizes. The purchase of ropes for the construction of swimming lanes was also authorised. The provision of extra seating accommodation for the carnival was left in the hands of Mr. A. G. Whiting. The entertainment of visiting officials was placed in the hands of the president, Dr. D. H. Saunders. Officials, for the meeting were appointed. A letter from the Lyall Bay Surf Club stated that the team would stage an exhibition of life-saving and compete in any events on its way to the surf championships at New Plymouth should the Eltham Club arrange a small carnival at a suitable date. It was decided to accept the offer and make final arrangements at a later meeting. FERN NUISANCE ON ROADS. PROLIFIC GROWTH THIS YEAR. The serious nuisance of fern growing on the roadsides was mentioned at the meeting of the Eltham County Council on Saturday. Cr. W. E. Carter said in some places fern was growing through hedges 12 and 14 feet high, and the farmers found they had no time to cut it. Where it was on level roadsides it was possible to run the mower over it, but this could not be done on banks and slopes. Other speakers endorsed the difficulties of dealing with the problem and said the growth had been prolific this year. The grazing of the roads as a means of checking fern growth in the spring was suggested, but it was considered apparent that the problem was very difficult to many settlers. COUNTY ENGINEER ON LOAN. ELTHAM’S OFFER TO HAWERA. That the Eltham County Council had offered the services of its engineer, Mr. F. Muggeridge, to the Hawera County Council during the illness of the Hawera engineer, Mr. A. Muggeridge, was mentioned at the meeting of the Eltham County Council on Saturday. The chairman, Cr. A. L. Campbell, said the offer had been accepted by Mr. J. B. Murdoch, who appreciated the assistance from a neighbouring local body. He said Mr. Muggeridge was showing considerable improvement and it was hoped that he would soon be restored to health. Members of the Eltham Council expressed their sympathy and wished Mr. Muggeridge a speedy recovery. ■
