PERMANENT HEAD
PRIME MINISTER’S DEPARTMENT. EXECUTIVE COUNCIL TO DECIDE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. “Nothing will be done until Cabinet considers the matter,” said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, when asked if it were decided who should fill the position of permanent head of the Prime Minister’s Department The appointment was a Cabinet matter, Mr. Forbes added, and was not in the hands of the Public Service Commissioner. The Executive Council would make the appointment and, consequently, it would not be made until the Governor-General was present, as he was chairman of the Council. A telegram from Wellington on Friday night said that it was certain that Mr. C. A. Berendsen, secretary for Imperial and External Affairs, would be appointed permanent head of the Prime Munster’s Department, a position, held for many years ■by the late Mr. F. D. Thomson. Mr. Berendsen would retain his secretarial post in connection with Imperial Affairs. Mr. C. A. Jeffery, who, as private secretary to the Prime Minister, had been acting clerk of the Executive Council would continue in the dual position.
