Mr. R. C. ’ Larsen, Matangi, and formerly of Okato, is spending the vacation in North Taranaki. Mrs. F. B. Stainton, Auckland, is staying at New Plymouth with her son, Mr. P. E. Stainton. Mrs. Stainton, who is 82 years of age, visited the North Egmont hostel yesterday. Mr. G. H. Mackley, general manager of railways, who has been on sick leave for three months, will resume duty today, states a Press Association message. Professor Peter McCallum, Professor of Pathology, Melbourne University, who has been touring Great Britain, Europe and the United States, left for Melbourne by the Monowai on Thursday after visiting relatives in New Zealand. Mr. Cyril King has been elected Mayor of Levuka, Fiji. Mr. King, who has spent nearly the whole of his life at the islands, is the second son of the late Mr. W. A. King, a veteran journalist, and publisher of the Polynesian Gazette, who died suddenly at a great age recently. ' Mr. F. W. Hunnewell, Miss L. Hunnewell (Mass., U.S.A.), Mrs. A. Boult, Misses P. V. Boult, D. N. Hawkins, M. Carnachan, N. E. Carnachan and T. White (Auckland), Mrs. Birch (Sydney), Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Pees (Royal Automobile Club, London), Mr. W. L. Britton (Taihape) and Miss E. A. ; Britton (Devonshire) were among the guests at the North Egmont hostel at the weekend. Dr. E. W. B. (Peter) Griffiths has been admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), according to advice received by his father, Mr. E. Griffiths, New Plymouth. Dr. Griffiths, who received his secondary education at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School and was subsequently a student at Otago University, is specialising in ear, eye, nose and throat work, and intends to undertake further study in this branch of medicine before returning to New Zealand. Mr. W. J. Berryman, who has been promoted from the New Plymouth office of the Labour Department to a position of district inspector of factories at Whangarei, was farewelled on Saturday morning by the members of the New Plymouth staff. Mr. C. P. Smith, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Berryman with a fountain pen as a memento of his seven and a half years’ association with the New Plymouth office, and offered to him congratulations on his promotion and good wishes for his future. Replying, Mr. Berryman thanked his fellow officers for their good wishes. He said that while appreciating the promotion he was not leaving New Plymouth without some regrets. Mr. Berryman leaves to-night by the express for the north.
