Agricultural Lime. The increase in the use of agricultural lime during the past ten years has been remarkable. The quantities handled by rail show that during the past decade the Dominion total has. more than doubled, while in the same period the North Island consumption , has more than quadrupled. In 1924-25, the railways carried a total of 91,506 tons of lime of which 23,265 tons was handled in the North Island and 68,241 tons in the South Island. Last year the Dominion total was 193,987, showing an increase of 19,873 or over 11 per cent. On the previous year. The North Island quota had increased to 99,919 tons or greater than the South Island, which was 94,068 tons. The respective increases for the North and South Islands last year were 5218 tons and 14,655 tons. The large increase in the use of lime is due to the financial stringency causing farmers to economise wherever possible. Then railway returns do not represent the total lime used as there are thousands of tons of lime carted direct from the works to the farm, without making use of the railway at allAn instance is the lime works in the Awakino Valley.
