Miss Nicholson is camping at Tauranga. Miss L. White, Hamilton, is visiting her sister, Mrs. R. E. Mcßae-Fittall.

Miss R. Alexander, Waverley, is Mrs. Hunter’s guest for a few days. Mrs. H. M. Besley returned from New Plymouth last week-end. Miss P. McGlashan has been holidaymaking at Wellington. Miss B. Bond, Wanganui, has been Mrs. Tocker’s guest at Ararata.

Mrs. E. R. Bavin has returned from the Kaupokonui beach. Mrs. Jones is Mrs. T. Goodson’s guest at Hurleyville. Mrs. Torrens, Inglewood, spent last week with her mother, Mrs. Rawcliffe.

Mrs. R. S. Ward returned from Auckland during the week. Mrs. C. Stewart has returned from New Plymouth. Miss H. Wood spent Christmas with her parents at Marton. Miss D. Bryant is also in Auckland attending the drama school. Miss C. Tonks is spending a fortnight with friends at New Plymouth. Miss June Marshall, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. D. Rogers, Waihi Road.

Mrs. R. S. Currie left yesterday morning by car for Napier.

Miss G. Dixon, Hamilton, was the guest of Mrs. A. Thrush, Normanby, during the Christmas holidays.

Miss B. Theed returned from Marton on Monday, having spent a week with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Walker have been spending the Christmas and New Year holidays at Ohawe beach. Miss P. Tonkin, Pembroke Road, is the guest of Mrs. C. Johnson, Waihi Road.

Mr. and Mrs. E. Pacey, New, Plymouth, passed through Hawera last week in the course of a motor tour.

Mrs. J. N. Henry and Miss P. Henry are spending a few weeks at a cosy little bay at Wellington. Miss W. Knight is spending part of the vacation at Auckland where she is attending the summer school of drama. Mrs. J. W. Black, Kilbimie, arrived last week and is staying with her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Wilson, Dive's Avenue. Misses J. and M. Alexander, Waverley, who were Miss S. Lovell’s guests last week, returned, home on Tuesday. Mrs. W. J. Nicholson, Auckland, and Mrs. F. J. Morris, New Plymouth, were Mrs. H. R. Kemp’s guests last weekend.

Mrs. G. Irwin, Wanganui, who has been visiting her parents at Okaiawa, Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Cameron, returned home on Saturday.

Miss N. Duckworth spent a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Duckworth, over last week-end, returning to New Plymouth on Wednesday last. Mrs. P" O. Veale and family, who have been spending a week or two at the Waiuku beach, Thames, returned on Wednesday evening.

Mrs. J. Pettett and family, Auckland, are visiting various relatives at Hawera, at present being the guests of Mrs. P. Pettett.

Miss J. Manners is spending the vacation with her aunt at Auckland, and will be paying a brief visit to Palmerston North friends on her return.. Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Smith and their daughter Ngaere returned to Wellington yesterday after spending a fortnight. as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Smith. Mrs. Stonewigg, Winchester, who has been the guest of Mrs. Good at Tariki for a few days, returned on Thursday and is staying with her mother, Mrs. Howlett.

Mrs. C. O. Bell and family left last Saturday to motor as far as Feilding, where they will spend a week before returning to Wellington. Mrs. R. G. Bell accompanied them. Mrs. B. McCarthy returned from a brief visit to Wellington last week, leaving for Auckland for the race week carnival af Ellerslie the following day. She motored home in easy stages during the week, arriving on Thursday evening. Mrs. Cyril Carmody returned from Auckland on Thursday, and is staying with Mrs. Carmody’s mother, Mrs. F. P. Monaghan. She will leave for Wanganui during the week-end, where they will make their home.

Miss Edna Lash, Stratford, who is shortly to be married, was the guest of honour at a gift afternoon given by Mrs. S. F. Prosser yesterday. Those present were Mesdames T. J. Allan, A. Bell, F. J. Nyberg (Manaia), Misses C. Hunter, E. Nicholson, A. Spence and V. Allan.

At the club day held at the Hawera Park croquet lawns last Friday, the following A grade players were successful in scoring 26 points in the silver button competition: Mesdames Crutch, J. Exley, Hobbs, Jackson and W. R. Shaw. Mrs. Exley won the draw. Mrs. Dowden won the buttons for B grade players. Among those "who journeyed from Hawera to attend the New Year’s Day race meeting at Stratford, were Mesdames C. H. Washer, W. 0. Williams, Meredith, Stonewigg (Winchester), Jones (Auckland), T. Goodson (Hurleyville), S. C. Tonks., Tudhope (Hamilton), Brewer, H. D*. Cameron, Moorhouse, J. Gray, H. M. Besley, R. B. Douglas, J. Houston, N. Douglas, N. Meuli, and Misses C. Tonks, F. E. R. McLean, M. Washer, J. MacDonald, H. Wood and Beere. Tennis Dance.

Notwithstanding the exceptionally warm weather, a fair number attended the dance given by the Hawera Tennis Club on Saturday evening as a fitting conclusion to the tournament. Those present were in holiday mood and the evening went with a swing. Music was played by Mr. Barton and Mr. W. Barleyman, and the women’s committee consisted of Misses M. Bright, C. Tonks, M. Washer, M. Black, R. Pease and K. Coleman. Among those present were Mesdames H. Jones, N. Douglas (Stratford), N. Meuli and Misses R. Furrie (Stratford), P. Fountaine (Eltham), M. Dickie (Waverley), H. Carson, P. Lovell, G. Goodson, K. Coleman, N. Duckworth, P. Wylds, B. Powdrell, M. Bright, M. Black, P. Betts (Masterton) and G. Robb. Drama School. News has been received from Auckland that the Hawera representatives attending the summer school of drama being held under the auspices of the British Drama League at Auckland, are spending a most enjoyable and instructive week. Miss Doris Bryant has been .particularly successful, being given a

part in the difficult and much discussed play “Gruach,” which is being produced by Miss Bessie Thompson, Dunedin. Miss M. Burgess is prompting in another play, “Symphony in Illusion,’’ under Mr. Arnold Goodwin’s direction, and Mrs. Bennett, and Misses C. Reilly, M. Quin and W. Knight have been given “walk on” parts. Another play being produced at the school by Mr. J. D. Swan is the well-known Barrie play, “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals.”
