MINING IN TASMANIA
INCREASED ACTIVITY. EXCELLENT POSSIBILITIES. Hobart, Dec. 4. Increased activity in mining has been apparent in Tasmania in the last year, and there is optimism for the development of enterprises which have been lying dormant for many years owing to the low price of metals and other circumstances. The Briseis tin mine paid more than £500,000 in dividends in the 30 years before the disastrous floods in 1929, since when operations have been practically at a standstill. The mine has been taken over by the Burma Malay Tin Co., which proposes to spend £70,000 in placing the mine in active production again. About 130 men are working on the property, and the company is acquiring other tai properties in the district. Negotiations are still taking place with a London syndicate which proposes to re-open the famous Tasmanian Mine at Beaconsfield, which has produced £3,000,000 worth of gold. It is believed that the same interests have acquired an option over the Golden Gate Mine at Mathinna, where £1,000,000 worth of gold has been won. These mines have not been working for many years, but they ’are believed to have excellent possibilities.
