TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS GREAT CONFIDENCE DISPLAYED. THRILLING WOMEN'S CONTEST. YOUNG BROMWICH’S BRILLIANCE.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 11 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 4. Crawford showed that he is in good form in his first singles appearance in the Australian tennis championships today. He hit all his strokes strongly with the utmost confidence. He lost only four games. Miss Blick scored one of the greatest victories of her career in a thrilling three-set battle against Mrs. Molesworth, ranked the second woman player in Australia. Miss Blick six times held match point before she could clinch. Both the English women, Misses Round and Dearman, were in good form and had no difficulty in winning. Turnbull was not impressive and was fully extended by Grinstead, a brilliant Queensland player. Bromwich, the youthful New South Wales player with the two-handed forehand, who played brilliantly in the Victorian championships, again came to light to-day, defeating Kirby in a well-fought contest. Bromwich’s play was much admired. Results include: — Men’s Singles. Crawford defeated A. H. Temple, 6—l, 6—l, 6 —2. Turnbull defeated Grinstead, 9—7, £—4, 6— Bromwich defeated Kirby, 4—6, 6—2, 7— 6-1. Clemenger defeated Brugnon, 6—4, 6—4, 6-2. Menzel defeated Ryan, 6—4, 6—l, 3—6, 6-3. Women’s Singles. Miss Round defeated Miss D. Mauger, 6—2, 6—2. Mrs. Hopman defeated Miss Weston, 11-9, 6-0. Miss Dearman defeated Miss Wynne, 6—3, 6—2. Miss Blick defeated Mrs. Molesworth, 6—4, 4—6, 7—5. Men’s Doubles. Bromwich and Huxley v. Perry and Hughes, 4—6, 6—4, 6—3 (unfinished).
