EGGS FOR CANADA

NO DOMINION SHIPMENT. DOUBT WHETHER IT WOULD PAY. Little surprise was occasioned at Ottawa when .it was announced that a proposed trial shipment of 400 crates of’ New Zealand eggs had been cancelled. The difficulty of making such shipments a paying proposition, in competition with local fresh eggs, is thought to have been the reason for New Zealand's action. No protest, was made by Canadian poultrymen when the Dominion Government was advised that New Zealand proposed to bring fresh eggs into Canada during the three months when they are admitted duty free under the trade agreement—December, January and February. It was felt, however, that Canada’s supply was ample, particularly with a fairly mild autumn in view. It is pointed out that it costs about 22 cents a dozen to ship New Zealand eggs to Canada. With this added to production costs, it is doubtful that it would be a very profitable experiment,.-when Canadian fresh eggs are selling at aboirt .40 a dbtsn.
