MANAIA OFFENCES

LICENSING ACT BREACHES. IN HOTEL AFTER HOURS. Breaches of the Licensing Act at Manaia were dealt with by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Hawera Court yesterday. The informations in all cases were laid by Constable J. Scannell. William Baker, licensee of the Manaia Hotel, was convicted and ordered to pay costs amounting to 10s, while his wife was fined £3, with costs 10s. The charge preferred against Baker was of selling liquor after hours arid against Ethel Elizabeth Baker of being a person other than the licensee to supply liquor to persons at a time when they were not lawfully entitled to be supplied. A second charge against Baker of opening his premises for the sale of liquor after hours was withdrawn by leave. Constable Scannell in evidence, said that at 9.20 p.m. on December 8 he found Mrs. Baker supplying liquor to two men in a side i*oom. Baker was not on the premises. Mr. A. J. Christie, counsel for the defence, said the two men in question practically made their homes at the hotel, and after getting a cheque cashed by Mrs. Baker, they felt themselves under an obligation to stay for a drink. He stressed the fact that Baker' was away and that Mrs. Baker had been very frank in appealing for a light fine. For being found on the premises of the Waimate Hotel after hours on December 8 John Henry Bland and Frederick Mancer were each fined £l, with costs 10s. Arthur Conway and Edward Freyne, found after hours on the Manaia Hotel premises on the same date, were fined a like sum. RECORD MEMBERSHIP GROWTH. AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.

A record growth in membership was the cause for congratulatory comment when the monthly meeting of the South Taranaki Automobile Association was held last night. The president, Mr. W. O. Williams, said that membership of the Automobile Association continued to grow in a most -gratifying way. The association had 1767 members of whom 67 5 per cent, were already financial. In the middle of November a new membership competition amongst members was initiated. The competition winners were: Mr. A. Hammond, Hawera, 1- Mr. C. Hammond, Hawera, 2; Mr. A. V. Vinsen, Stratford, 3; Messrs. Jeromson Bros., Manaia, 4; Mr. J. W. Rogers, Hawera, 5. , At last night’s meeting the executive had 153 applications for membership to deal with, easily the greatest riumber of new members ever to be elected at a monthly meeting of the executive. NORMANBY SHOW BALANCE. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY MEETS. A meeting of the Normanby Horticultural Society was held on Thursday evening when Mr. E. A. Linn presided over a fair attendance. The report and balance-sheet of the spring show, presented, by the secretary (Mr. H. D. Hughes), was satisfactory, there being a greater profit than that shown at either of the previous spring shows. , v -Matters connected with the gladioli show in January were discussed and arrangements were made to organise a workingbee to prepare the hall and grounds. It was decided. to hold a dance on the evening of the show, the women’s committee to undertake the catering. The resignation of Mr. .E. P. Grant from the executive committee was accepted with regret and a motion of sympathy was passed with him in’ his illness. Members paid a tribute to Mr. Grant for his years of enthusiastic service to the society and it was unanimously decided to elect him a life A vote of thanks was accorded the Ketemarae Maori Women’s Institute for a gift of five dozen plates. ■

ANGLICAN SUNDAY SCHOOL. PRIZE-GIVING AT PATEA. The distribution of prizes to members of the St. George’s Anglican Sunday school at Patea was made by the vicar, the Rev. W. H. Walton, on Sunday. The recipients were: Senior boys, attendance and' lessons, Colin Roots and Edward Homer equal; senior boys, full attendance, Peter Blyde, Harold Bond; Miss Kelly’s class, senior girls, attendance and lessons, Kathleen Rook 1, Kathleen Blackman and Gwen Bond equal 2; Miss Williams’ class, attendance and lessons, Athalie Roots, Betty Ashby; Miss L. Bond’s class, Gloria Bond (attendance), Shirley Macken (lessons); Miss Masters’ class, boys, teacher’s special prize, Ronald Hill, C. Macken; Mis I. Bond’s infants, Mary Ashby, Geoffrey Honeyfield; Miss Kelly’s active service cadets prizes, Edna Bates, Betty Ashby. CIVIL CLAIMS DECIDED. hawera court sitting. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil cases at the Hawera Magistrate’s Court by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., yesterday: A. H. Shaw v. G. Ritchie, £1 0s 4d (Ils); Paramount Tyre Service Ltd. v. W. Baldwin, £2 19s 6d (£1 9s 6d); A. H. Shaw v. A. Coleman, £4 0s 5d (£1 3s 6d); R. P. Morrissey v. L. Nodder, £4 4s 6d (£2 13s 6d); E. T. Simon v. R. W. Cleaver, £3 16s 2d (£1 5s 6d). On a judgment summons Leslie Arthur Gower was ordered to pay L. Des Forges £5 18s 6d (costs 15s 6d) forthwith, in default five days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended on the payment of £1 a month.
