WENDY’S DRESSMAKERS

KNITTED OUTFIT FOR A DOLL. "A knitted outfit for my doll, please!” writes a Wendy girl, so this week we’ll see how to make a pretty dress, with coat and cap to match. They will fit a doll measuring about twelve inches high, so if yours is larger or smaller you must increase or decrease the number of stitches accordingly. You will need two ounces of three-ply wool, a pair of number eight needles and a pair of number eleven needles. The Dress. Begin with the dregs, which is started at the lower edge of the front. Cast on seventy-two stitches, using the number eight needles, tnd knit the first row plain. Next row, knit two, put the wool forward over the needle as though you were going to purl and knit two stitches together. Continue thus,’ knitting two, woOl forward, knit two together, all the way along. Work all the rows in the same way, until you have a strip two-and-a-half inches deep. Change to the number eleven needles, and knit half an.inch of one-plain onepUrl ribbing, for the waist-band of the dress. Now go back to the bigger needles, and knit in' stodking-stitch, (one row plain, and row purl, alternately), for one-and-a-quarter inches. Cast off three stitches at the beginning of the next two rows, to decrease for the armholes, and continue in stocking-stitch for another inch-and-a-half. Then knit the yoke in ribbing to match the waist, for one inch, but still on the bigger needles. Cast off, and make the back .Hiiiixiiiiiiiiiiiiii’iioiiiiiiiiiiiiiioui'iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuii.iinnuo

of the dress in exactly the same way. Join the shoulders together for an inch each side, then pick up the stitches round the. left armhole arid knit an inch of stocking-stitch. Change to the small needles and knit half an inch of ribbing,: then cart off. Make the right sleeve in the same way. Sew the side and underarm seams together, and the dress is finished. The Coat. The coat .i£ knitted in five pieces—two sleeves, back and two fronts. Start With the left front, casting on thirtytwo stitches, using number eight needles. Knit in stocking-stitch' for six inches, cast off three stitches at the beginning of the next row, continue for two inches and cast off. Knit the right front to match. Tor the back, cast on sixtyfour stitches, knit in stocking-stitch for six inches, cast off three stitches at the beginning of the next two rows, and continue for two inches, (fifty-eight stitches). Cast off, and join the two fronts to the back for one inch on each shoulder. Pick up the stitches on the left armhole, and knit in stockingstitch for three inches for the left sleeve, finishing with half an inch of ribbing on the small needles. Work the right .sleeve to match. Now pick up the stitches round the neck, and do ten rows of plain knitting, for the collar. Cast off two stitches at the beginning of each of the last four rows, to shape the ends of the collar. Sew up the side and underarm seams of the jacket, then sew a crochet wool chain to each side of the neck-opening for neck-ties. And the Cap. The little cap is just a Strip or ribbing, ,two inches deep and long enough to go round the doll’s head. Sew the short ends together, and gather up the top, hiding the gathers under a button oi woolly pom-pom. . . Wendy’s Dressmaker.
